Chapter 1 – 8 Years Ago

The building is of red and white. ” Welcome Freshmen to University of King Edward”, the white colour banner flashed across the hall that I am walking forward to. Armed with the only black and orange Nike backpack that I am carrying,“Here you go, Shan, you first day of school”.

I can’t help having the mixture feeling slightly nervous and strange as I walk towards the reception counter. After the registration with two senior girls who are beaming with the one million smiles, it somehow does make my day. I am not thrill but I do look forward for an adventure in the university, meeting new people, learning new things and adapting to my new ‘independent’ life ..Just so you know, I’m 19 and I’m alone far away from home.

University of King Edward is located at a small city in Stangi by the name of Prine Lane, an alien city which is about 4 hours drive from my hometown in another state, Trennenze. This is where I will be staying for the next three years till I am with a Degree in Interior Design under my belt.

I looked down to the folder and a name tag that was handed over to me

“Freshmen : Shannen Coleman”.

“Please head down to Hall 3 and you will be able to locate your group there. We had assigned each one of you to a group and soon we will be starting our Enrolment Day ceremony in a short while”

“ With warmest regards, Student Representative President”

The room is already filled with people, everyone is busy talking to one another as though they had known each other for years. Where else, I am alone with nobody.

“Let me see..row number 3”as I looked around the basketball hall. I found my group in less than 5 minutes and there were just few of us there. There are two girls both talking to each other and some boys standing around, looking at some leftlets from the folder that we received earlier.

A girl saw me walking by the group and I give her a smile and she smile to me in return before she continue her conversation with her friend. While waiting for the so call enrollment ceremony to start, I looked around to see the people that might end up being my course mate. As I wandered my eye around from a pretty but rather cocky looking girl, to a spectacled and beaming with braces girl just like Ugly Betty and to a bunch of hip hop fellows who seems to found their group pretty soon on first day in university.

Then I saw him walking towards me from the front. He was about 6ft 5, fair-very fair skinned , golden hair that covers his forehead as he walked with his eyes looking at the ground, frameless spectacle and he’s wearing a blue colour soccer jersey. He wasn’t wearing his name tag though. He walked pass me and stood just right behind me. I can some how feel him towering over my 5ft 2 height. He wasn’t someone that will exactly catch my attention but somehow I don’s know why I just feel like looking at him. Something about this silence attracts me, I guess..and of course, we are the only one that is not talking to anyone in the hall.

‘ Ahem..testing testing, yea, got it, thanks Desmond” I heard.

“ Hello everyone, good morning and welcome to your new Home – University of King Edward. I’m the President of Student Representative for your batch and my name is Eunice. Well, first we are going to do is some ice breaking games and today will entirely filled with fun and games before any formal section for tomorrow. Well lets not waste any  more time, I believe you’ve found your group, just look around and introduce yourself to your teammates”

“ Irwin – I’m Irwin Carl” I turned and saw him handing his right hand out to me

“Oh hi, I’m Shannen. You can call me Shan” I smiled. That’s it. That’s all. We just said ‘Hi’ and we are back to our own silence zone.
